Western Railway Records Key Gains In Electrification, Safety And Digital Systems In 2025

December 30, 2025: Western Railway marked 2025 as a milestone year, registering progress across electrification, infrastructure development, safety initiatives and digital adoption. Among the most significant achievements was the completion of electrification across its entire Broad Gauge network, reinforcing the zone’s shift towards energy-efficient rail operations. This development aligns with national sustainability objectives and strengthens Western Railway’s position in environmentally responsible transport, said WR chief spokesperson Vineet Abhishek while releasing the year-ender on Sunday.

Operational performance also remained strong during the year. Western Railway achieved a punctuality rate of 97% for Mail and Express trains, despite operational challenges. The performance highlighted improvements in planning, monitoring and execution, setting a benchmark within the railway system.

Digital initiatives formed a key part of the year’s progress. Western Railway implemented 100% digital ticket checking through the deployment of 2,270 Hand-Held Terminals (HHTs). The zone also retained its top position in Rail Madad grievance redressal for the fifth consecutive year, Abhishek said.

Safety and connectivity measures were expanded through the construction of 138 Road Over Bridges and Under Bridges, elimination of 114 manned level crossings, and installation of 660 km of W-beam fencing. These measures contributed to improved passenger safety and smoother operations.

Public engagement and heritage conservation were reflected in initiatives such as the Bandra Station Mahotsav, organised to highlight the historical and architectural significance of Bandra suburban station, Abhishek said. The role of Railway Protection Force personnel was also underlined, with 37 lives saved under Operation Jeevan Raksha and 769 runaway or missing children rescued under Operation Nanhe Farishtey.

On the manufacturing front, the completion of the Rs 21,405 crore Loco Manufacturing Shop at Dahod marked a major step. Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the facility will produce 9000 HP electric freight locomotives under the “Make in India” programme.

Infrastructure expansion continued with the completion of 234 km of new lines, doubling and gauge conversion works. The commissioning of India’s first 2×25 kV traction system on the Khachrod–Nagda section further enhanced capacity, speed and energy efficiency.
