December 31, 2025: Mumbai’s suburban railway system will run 12 additional train services in the early hours of January 1 to manage passenger movement during New Year celebrations, railway officials said on Thursday. The special services are aimed at facilitating safer and smoother travel for commuters returning home after midnight festivities across the city and its suburbs.
Of the 12 special trains, eight will be operated by Western Railway, while four services will be run by Central Railway. The additional trains are being scheduled during the post-midnight hours, a period that typically sees a spike in passenger numbers due to New Year celebrations at public spaces, commercial hubs and residential areas across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
A Central Railway spokesperson said that two special trains will operate on the main line between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Kalyan. These services will cater to commuters travelling towards the eastern suburbs and adjoining areas, which witness heavy movement during major festivals and events.
In addition, two special services will be operated on the Harbour line between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Panvel. The Harbour line connects the island city with Navi Mumbai nodes and adjoining suburbs, making it a key corridor for late-night travel during celebrations.
All four Central Railway special services will halt at every station along their respective routes, the spokesperson said. This arrangement is intended to provide wider accessibility and convenience for passengers travelling during the festive period, particularly those heading to suburban stations that may otherwise have limited late-night train options.
Railway officials said the decision to run special suburban services reflects efforts to manage crowd movement and reduce pressure on regular late-night services. Passengers have been advised to check updated train schedules and plan their journeys accordingly to avoid inconvenience during the early hours of the New Year.
