Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train Achieves First Mountain Tunnel Breakthrough In Palghar

January 3, 2026: The Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project reached a significant construction milestone on January 2, 2026, with the successful breakthrough of Maharashtra’s first mountain tunnel in Palghar district. The tunnel, identified as MT-5, marks the first mountain tunnelling breakthrough along India’s maiden bullet train corridor and represents a key step forward in the ambitious infrastructure project.

The newly completed mountain tunnel measures approximately 1.5 km in length, making it one of the longest tunnels in Palghar. It is strategically located between the Virar and Boisar bullet train stations, a stretch that posed complex geological challenges. Excavation was carried out simultaneously from both ends and completed within 18 months, reflecting careful planning and execution.

The tunnel was constructed using the advanced drill-and-blast method, which allows engineers to closely monitor ground behaviour in real time during excavation. This technique enables the deployment of customised support systems such as shotcrete, rock bolts, and lattice girders, based on actual site conditions rather than assumptions. Officials confirmed that all essential safety measures, including ventilation systems, fire prevention protocols, and safe access and exit arrangements, were strictly followed throughout the tunnelling process.

The Palghar breakthrough builds on earlier achievements along the corridor. Last year, the Ministry of Railways completed a 5-km underground tunnel connecting Thane and the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC). The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), which is implementing the project, is also working on India’s first 21-km undersea tunnel between the BKC underground station and Shilphata in Maharashtra.

Spanning 508 km, the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor will feature 12 stations: Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Billimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati. The project aims to significantly cut travel time while offering a modern and comfortable rail experience.

On fares, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has said the Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train will offer a comfortable journey with ticket pricing structured to remain affordable for the middle class.
