January 3, 2026: Infrastructure works across the Mumbai Division of Western Railway are progressing at an accelerated pace, driven by the Union ministry’s renewed focus on strengthening rail capacity nationwide. Several major projects aimed at easing congestion and improving commuter experience are now nearing completion, according to Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Pankaj Singh.
Addressing the 67th Foundation Day celebrations of the Bharat Merchants’ Chamber, Singh said that work on the fifth and sixth railway lines between Borivali and Bandra, as well as the Borivali–Virar stretch, is advancing rapidly. He indicated that the Borivali–Bandra section is expected to be completed within the next few days, marking a significant milestone in capacity expansion on the busy Western Railway corridor.
The DRM outlined a series of upgrades intended to reduce crowding at key stations and improve service quality. Approval has been granted for the construction of a deck at Dadar station, following the model implemented at Khar and Borivali, to ease pressure on congested platforms. In addition, Western Railway has received a new air-conditioned local train rake, which is currently undergoing trials. Once introduced into regular operations, it is expected to increase AC local services by 10 to 12 trips daily. Singh emphasised that expenditure on rail infrastructure should be viewed as an investment, noting that each rupee spent generates multiple economic returns.
During the event, Bharat Merchants’ Chamber president Manoj Jalan urged authorities to upgrade stations in major commercial hubs such as Marine Lines, Charni Road, and Grant Road to world-class standards, highlighting their importance for trader-passengers and railway revenues. Responding to the request, Singh said that work to enhance passenger facilities at Marine Lines station is already underway and progressing steadily.
Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Abhay Chauhan also addressed concerns related to ticket fraud, stating that the railways are exploring colour markings on tickets to prevent misuse through fake ticket generation. He added that the bullet train project, being executed by the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited, is progressing well.
The programme also saw the release of the Chamber’s 2026 calendar and participation from several traders, officials, and dignitaries, underscoring continued dialogue between the railways and Mumbai’s business community.
