Navi Mumbai International Airport Crosses 1 Lakh Passengers Within 19 Days Of Operations

January 16, 2026: The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has achieved a key operational milestone by handling over one lakh passengers within the first 19 days of commercial operations, indicating a steady build-up in passenger traffic soon after launch. As of January 12, the airport had recorded a total of 109,917 passengers, comprising 55,934 arrivals and 53,983 departures.

January 10, 2026, emerged as the busiest day so far, with 7,345 passengers processed in a single day. During this period, NMIA handled 734 air traffic movements (ATMs), reflecting growing airline activity. This figure includes 32 general aviation movements, highlighting the airport’s early adoption across both scheduled and non-scheduled operations.

Operational data also points to efficient ground handling performance. The airport processed 40,260 arriving bags and 38,774 departing bags, indicating smooth baggage management systems that have contributed to passenger convenience during the initial phase of operations.

Cargo operations have also begun alongside passenger services. NMIA has handled 22.21 tonnes of cargo so far, underscoring its role as a dual-purpose airport capable of supporting both passenger and freight movement from the outset. In terms of passenger connectivity, Delhi, Goa, and Bengaluru have emerged as the most active sectors during the early days of operations.

The airport has been developed with modern infrastructure and streamlined operational processes, with an emphasis on safety, service quality and efficiency. Authorities are adopting a calibrated approach to scaling up services, ensuring that operational stability and passenger experience remain consistent.

NMIA now serves as Mumbai’s second major commercial airport, complementing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the facility on October 8, 2025, and commercial flight operations commenced on December 25.

Passengers can access the airport through multiple transport options, including road connectivity, suburban rail links, taxis and bus services. Although the project received government approval in 2007, its execution was delayed largely due to prolonged land acquisition challenges.
