January 17, 2026: The Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project has entered a new phase with the start of electrification work at the Purna River crossing in Gujarat’s Navsari district. The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), the implementing agency for the Rs 1.08 lakh crore project, said on Friday that civil construction at the river crossing has been completed, allowing progress on power-related infrastructure.
According to NHSRCL, the installation of Overhead Equipment (OHE) masts is now underway at the site, marking a key step toward operational readiness of the bullet train corridor. The agency confirmed the development in a post on X, stating, “Advancing towards electrification at the Purna River crossing. Following the completion of the civil structure, installation of OHE masts and Noise Barriers is underway at the Purna River crossing on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor.”
The 508-km corridor, which will connect Mumbai and Ahmedabad, spans 352 km across Gujarat and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and 156 km in Maharashtra. It will include 12 stations, with eight located in Gujarat—Sabarmati, Ahmedabad, Anand, Vadodara, Bharuch, Surat, Bilimora and Vapi—and four in Maharashtra at Boisar, Virar, Thane and Mumbai.
NHSRCL has reported steady progress across multiple segments of the project. More than 332 km of viaduct construction and 415 km of pier work have been completed. In addition, 17 river bridges, five pre-stressed concrete bridges and 12 steel bridges are finished. Track-related works are also advancing, with 292 track km of reinforced concrete track bed completed.
Electrification activities are progressing along the mainline, with approximately 4,800 OHE masts erected over a route length of around 111 km. In Maharashtra, tunnelling work continues, with a breakthrough achieved in the first of seven mountain tunnels in Palghar district, while excavation is ongoing in the remaining tunnels. Separately, 5 km of the 21 km tunnel between Bandra Kurla Complex and Shilphata have been excavated.
Station and depot construction is progressing in parallel, with rolling stock depots under development in Surat and Ahmedabad, and station works advancing across Gujarat and Maharashtra.
