BMC Begins Preliminary Work On Rs 848-Crore Cable-Stayed Flyover Linking JJ Flyover And Byculla Y Bridge

January 24, 2026: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated preliminary work on a new cable-stayed flyover in South Mumbai, a major infrastructure project aimed at easing traffic congestion in the Byculla and Mazgaon areas. The proposed 892-metre-long flyover will connect the existing JJ Flyover with the upcoming Y Bridge in Byculla. A work order worth Rs 848.63 crore was issued last month, paving the way for initial groundwork.

Planned in line with the city’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan, the flyover is designed to streamline vehicular movement by allowing motorists to bypass two key traffic junctions. The alignment will pass over signals near Saboo Siddik Polytechnic College and Richardson and Cruddas along JJ Road in Nagpada, areas that frequently witness congestion during peak hours.

As per project details, the flyover will extend over 850 metres from the JJ Flyover and link directly to the ramp of the redeveloped Y Bridge near the Mumbai Fire Brigade headquarters. The Y Bridge, which is over 104 years old, is being reconstructed as a cable-stayed structure under a joint initiative of the BMC and the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC). The first phase of the Y Bridge redevelopment is expected to be completed by March 2026.

The new flyover will comprise four lanes, with two lanes in each direction. The north-bound carriageway will measure 832 metres, while the south-bound side will extend to 892 metres. Of the south-bound length, around 230 metres will consist of a cable-stayed span.

The tender for the project was floated nearly two months before the work order was awarded on December 12, 2025. While preliminary activities are underway, full-scale construction will commence only after the traffic police department has granted the required No Objection Certificate (NOC). The project is scheduled for execution over 24 months, excluding the monsoon period, with completion targeted by 2029.

Although the initial cost estimate stood at Rs 805 crore, the final contract value has risen to Rs 848.63 crore.

Explaining the project’s significance, a senior BMC officer said, “The proposed bridge will play a crucial role in ensuring smooth and seamless traffic movement from South Mumbai to North Mumbai. Since the flyover will eliminate waiting time at two traffic signal junctions, it will also reduce travel time and fuel costs. As soon as we procure the NOC from the traffic police department, we will start the permanent ground works immediately.”
