Monopile Bridge To Link Versova–Dahisar Coastal Road Over Goregaon Flyover

January 26, 2026: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has resolved a key challenge in the construction of the Versova–Dahisar Coastal Road by approving a new bridge alignment at Goregaon without demolishing the existing Veer Savarkar Flyover, also known as the MTNL Flyover. The decision follows technical evaluation and public opposition to the earlier demolition plan.

The Veer Savarkar Flyover was initially identified as an obstruction to the coastal road’s proposed connectivity toward Mindspace, Dindoshi, and the Goregaon–Mulund Link Road. The BMC had maintained that dismantling the flyover was unavoidable due to space constraints and alignment requirements. However, residents and local representatives opposed the move, citing traffic disruption and the relatively recent construction of the flyover.

In response, the civic body sought technical inputs from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). Based on the assessment, approval has now been granted to construct a new bridge using monopile technology. Under this approach, the coastal road bridge will pass over the existing flyover, supported by single vertical pillars placed strategically at the ends and sides of the structure.

According to the IIT report, while the monopile design allows construction with fewer pillars and reduced land requirement, there is a potential risk of traffic congestion near the bridge supports. To address this, IIT has advised the BMC to widen the road on both sides of the proposed bridge to ensure smoother vehicular movement.

The Veer Savarkar Flyover stretches from the Radisson Hotel area to Rustomjee Ozone in Goregaon. It was inaugurated in 2018 at a cost of ₹27 crore. The Versova–Dahisar Coastal Road, meanwhile, is being developed in six phases as part of Mumbai’s larger coastal infrastructure programme.

With the revised plan, the BMC aims to maintain the existing flyover while advancing the coastal road project. The monopile bridge will undergo further feasibility checks and technical scrutiny before construction begins, officials said, marking a shift toward accommodating infrastructure expansion without dismantling operational assets.
