The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is considering adding a sixth station on Mumbai Metro Line 2B, aimed at enhancing ridership and improving east-west connectivity between Mandale and Chembur.
Currently, the Mandale–Diamond Garden section has five operational stations, with the first phase of Metro Line 2B nearly complete. The 23.64 km-long corridor is part of the larger Metro 2 project, which will eventually feature 37 stations across the city. Construction delays have resulted in phased commissioning, with the Mandale–Diamond Garden stretch planned to operate as a standalone section initially.
The proposed station, Chembur Naka, would follow Diamond Garden, bridging gaps in connectivity and increasing passenger usage on the partially operational corridor. Officials note that operating only five stations could lead to lower ridership, as connectivity options remain limited except for the Mankhurd railway station interchange. “Adding Chembur Naka will improve the operational efficiency of the Mandale–Diamond Garden section,” said a senior MMRDA official.
Last year, the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) inspected and certified the Mandale–Diamond Garden stretch, paving the way for partial operations. With the inclusion of the sixth station, authorities expect a smoother transition from a standalone corridor to integrated service with the rest of the Metro 2B line.
Once fully operational, Metro Line 2B will connect DN Nagar to Metro Line 1, link Bandra Kurla Complex to Metro Line 3, and provide a vital east-west transit corridor across Mumbai. The line is expected to be fully functional between 2026 and 2027, enhancing commuter convenience, reducing road congestion, and supporting the city’s long-term urban mobility goals.
