BMC Reignites Rs 220-Crore Mahim–Bandra East Flyover Project To Ease WEH Bottlenecks

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has revived its long-pending plan to construct a flyover linking Mahim and Bandra (East), in a renewed effort to tackle persistent congestion along a crucial stretch of the Western Express Highway (WEH). According to a report by The Free Press Journal, the civic administration has issued fresh tenders for the project after earlier bidding rounds failed to attract contractor participation.

As reported by Maharashtra Times, the proposed elevated corridor will begin at Machhimar Colony on Senapati Bapat Marg in Mahim and extend to Bandra (East). The flyover is intended to provide motorists with an alternative route to the heavily burdened WEH, where traffic snarls routinely stretch from Mithi Chowk to Dadar during peak hours.

Officials believe that the new connector will significantly reduce pressure on this arterial corridor by diverting a portion of east-west traffic away from the highway. The move comes amid rising vehicular volumes and increasing commuter complaints about travel delays in the central-western suburbs.

The project is estimated to cost approximately Rs 220.17 crore. By floating new tenders, the BMC aims to fast-track the long-stalled proposal and move closer to execution. Civic authorities expect the flyover to streamline connectivity between Mahim and Bandra (East), improve traffic dispersal, and enhance overall road efficiency in the surrounding areas.

If implemented as planned, the infrastructure upgrade could play a key role in easing daily commuting challenges and strengthening Mumbai’s urban transport network, particularly along one of its most congested highway corridors.
