The Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (MahaRail) has announced that Mumbai’s first double-decker Road Over Bridge (ROB) at Elphinstone is progressing swiftly and is expected to be completed by September 2026. The ambitious structure forms a key part of the Sewri–Worli Elevated Corridor and marks a significant upgrade in the city’s transport infrastructure.
The project has now entered a crucial phase, with the demolition of the 112-year-old British-era bridge underway. The redevelopment has been entrusted to MahaRail by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). Engineers are executing the complex dismantling process using two 800-metric-ton cranes. Notably, the operation is being carried out over active railway tracks without interrupting suburban train services on both the Western Railway and Central Railway lines.
The new ROB features a rare double-decker configuration that will simultaneously span the Central and Western Railway corridors. The railway span will extend 132 metres, ensuring smooth movement above the tracks. The lower deck will feature 2+2 traffic lanes, along with a footpath, to maintain vital east-west connectivity for local commuters. The upper deck will comprise 2+2 lanes without a footpath and will serve as a direct link for the Sewri–Worli Elevated Corridor, enhancing access to the Atal Setu (Mumbai Trans Harbour Link) and strengthening regional connectivity.
Designed with an Open Web Girder superstructure, the bridge promises durability and structural resilience suited to railway conditions. With an estimated project cost of Rs 167.35 crore, the redevelopment aims to retain the legacy of the historic bridge while addressing Mumbai’s growing mobility demands with improved efficiency and safety.
