The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced that 50% of the foundation work for the elevated viaduct of the Thane Coastal Road has been completed, marking a key milestone in the project’s progress.
Construction teams have now advanced to pier cap works and girder installation along the 13.45-kilometre alignment. Once completed, the six-lane coastal corridor will connect Kharegaon in Kalwa to Gaimukh in Thane, providing a much-needed alternative route to the heavily congested Ghodbunder Road.
Currently, commuters along this stretch face frequent traffic jams, deteriorating road surfaces, and slow-moving heavy vehicles, often resulting in extended travel times. The new corridor is expected to ease congestion, improve connectivity, and offer smoother, faster travel for daily commuters and commercial vehicles alike.
The Thane Coastal Road project is being developed with modern engineering practices to ensure structural stability and long-term durability, addressing the region’s growing traffic demands. MMRDA officials have reiterated that the project remains on schedule, with completion targeted for 2028.
Once operational, the corridor is projected to significantly reduce travel times between key points in Thane, improve accessibility to adjacent neighbourhoods, and support regional economic activity by providing a more reliable transport route. The elevated design ensures minimal disruption to existing roadways and surrounding communities during construction, while enhancing the overall urban infrastructure of Thane.
With half of the foundation already in place, the MMRDA has emphasized continued progress on girder installation and other structural components as critical next steps toward delivering the corridor on time.
The project is expected to transform the commuting experience in Thane, offering a faster, safer, and more efficient alternative to existing overburdened routes.
