The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has approved Rs 4,897.19 crore for infrastructure projects in the Kalyan Lok Sabha constituency for 2026–27, with a focus on the Kalyan-Bhiwandi link of Mumbai Metro Line 5 and the Kalyan Ring Road. The funding aims to improve connectivity, reduce congestion in Bhiwandi, and strengthen links between industrial and residential zones by December 2026.
Metro Line 5, also known as the Orange Line, connects Thane, Bhiwandi, and Kalyan. In the Thane-Bhiwandi section, structural work has crossed 97%. To support operations, MMRDA has signed a Rs 2,481 crore contract with Titagarh Rail Systems for 22 six-coach train sets.
Due to land acquisition delays at the proposed Kasheli car shed, initial operations will use a stabling line at the Bhiwandi end. Phase 2 of the project, linking Bhiwandi to Kalyan, includes a 3 km underground stretch near Dhamankar Naka to limit disruption in dense residential areas. The corridor will integrate with the Central Railway at Kalyan station, enabling smoother intermodal transfers.
Officials expect the metro to significantly reduce travel time between Kalyan and Thane from about 90 minutes to 25 minutes. Areas such as Kalyan West, including Khadakpada and Adharwadi, are witnessing rising housing demand. Localities like Kalher and Kasheli are emerging as options for affordable housing, while parts of Bhiwandi, including Temghar and Anjur Phata, are seeing new residential development near proposed stations.
Alongside the metro, the Rs 600 crore Kalyan Ring Road is planned to divert heavy vehicles away from city roads. Together, the metro corridor and ring road are expected to ease congestion and improve overall mobility in the region.
