Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Thursday outlined a large-scale infrastructure roadmap for Thane and Kalyan under the Rs 48,000 crore annual budget of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, approved earlier this week.
Deputy Chief Minister Shinde, who chairs the MMRDA, said Thane is being positioned as a ‘Mobility Hub’, while Kalyan will develop into a ‘future-ready advanced urban centre’ through improved connectivity and urban infrastructure. An allocation of Rs 12,000 crore to Rs 13,000 crore has been set aside for projects in Thane, identified as a key transport node in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
Among major approvals is the 12-km Thane-Borivali twin tunnel project, cleared at an estimated Rs 18,838 crore, with Rs 3,000 crore earmarked for 2026–27. Metro expansions, including Mumbai Metro Line 4, Mumbai Metro Line 4A, and Mumbai Metro Line 6, are expected to strengthen connectivity between Thane and Mumbai.
The first phase of the Thane Coastal Road project has received Rs 1,025 crore, while Rs 880 crore has been allocated for the Anand Nagar–Saket elevated road. Additional provisions include lake rejuvenation works at Railadevi and Masunda, and Rs 214 crore for the Kolshet–Kalher Creek bridge.
For Kalyan-Dombivli, allocations ranging from Rs 2,500 crore to Rs 3,500 crore have been proposed. The Kalyan Ring Road project has been granted Rs 600 crore. Metro projects such as Mumbai Metro Line 5, Mumbai Metro Line 5A, and Mumbai Metro Line 14 aim to position Kalyan as a transit centre.
The Rs 584 crore Airoli–Katai Naka road will improve links with Navi Mumbai. Directions have also been issued to fast-track the Poshir and Shilar dam projects to address water supply needs. A broader regional transport plan includes a 337-km Metro network, pod taxis, boat taxis, flyovers, and underground roads.
