The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority is considering the addition of a sixth station along a partially cleared segment of Metro Line 2B to strengthen ridership and enhance neighbourhood access. The proposal emerged after a reassessment of projected passenger numbers and field evaluations revealed connectivity gaps affecting commuters on this stretch.
According to officials, the proposed station would be positioned within the already cleared portion of the corridor and is intended to improve integration with surface transport networks. The move aims to better serve nearby residential pockets and commercial zones that currently face limited direct access to the metro system.
Introducing a new station at this stage would involve revising certain structural plans and coordinating closely with civic authorities overseeing land acquisition and utility relocation. The agency has initiated consultations with municipal bodies to secure the required approvals while ensuring that disruption to local residents and businesses remains minimal. Authorities indicated that any construction activity would likely be phased to keep progress on adjoining sections uninterrupted.
Transport experts believe that adding another stop could help balance passenger movement along the corridor and raise daily footfall by improving first and last mile connectivity. Reduced walking distances and improved access to workplaces and educational institutions are expected to benefit commuters. Operational strategies and revenue forecasts may also need recalibration to reflect potential shifts in travel demand.
The project is expected to be financed through MMRDA allocations, with possible backing from the state government. Standard tendering procedures will be followed for contractor appointments. Final timelines will depend on statutory clearances and detailed engineering approvals, with officials emphasising safety and seamless execution as key priorities.
