Two Pune Flyovers Face Demolition For 40-Km Multilevel Corridor & Metro Plan

Two key flyovers in Pune—at Hadapsar Gadital and Magarpatta Chowk—may be dismantled to make way for a proposed 40-km multilevel flyover corridor between Bhairoba Nullah and Yavat along the Solapur Highway. The move follows the earlier demolition of the structure at Savitribai Phule Pune University Chowk, with consultants reportedly recommending the removal of the existing flyovers to enable the construction of the new integrated project.

Hadapsar MLA Chetan Tupe confirmed that the Centre is implementing the corridor, which will run from Bhairoba Nullah to Yavat, alongside a proposed elevated Metro line on the same stretch. “To construct the multilevel flyover, the existing flyovers near Magarpatta and Hadapsar Gadital will have to be demolished,” Tupe said.

Though a final decision is pending, Tupe urged residents to approach the proposal practically. “If the city is to get a 40-km multilevel flyover, we should accept the technical assessment instead of turning it into an ego issue. The Hadapsar Gadital flyover is old and requires frequent maintenance. The Magarpatta flyover is new, but for long-term gains we must respect the opinion of technical experts,” he added.

Officials from the Pune Municipal Corporation said the project, a Central government initiative, integrates both a Metro corridor and a multilevel flyover. “Several cities have combined Metro and multilevel flyover structures. In Pune too, similar integration has been done at the SPPU Chowk and Nal Stop,” an official said.

The corridor will be executed by the National Highways Authority of India, with the tendering process underway. Union minister Nitin Gadkari has led discussions on the project, which aims to ease congestion along Solapur Road despite expected short-term disruptions.
