Authorities informed a court that the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and the contractors involved have yet to submit a detailed report on the recent Metro Line 4 slab collapse in Mulund that claimed one life and injured three others.
The incident occurred last week when a section of a precast parapet slab from the under-construction Metro Line 4 corridor fell onto vehicles moving along LBS Marg. The concrete structure crashed onto an autorickshaw and a car passing beneath the elevated stretch, resulting in one fatality and injuries to three passengers.
During court proceedings, police stated that the parapet slab had been installed just two days prior to the accident and was allegedly not fully concretised or properly secured. Investigators claimed it had been left inadequately fixed, posing a risk to commuters using the road below. They further indicated that essential safety protocols were not implemented at the site.
The contractors handling the affected stretch include Milan Road Buildtech and DB Hill LBG. According to police submissions, there was insufficient coordination with traffic authorities before the installation work commenced. Investigators have sought information regarding the number of supervisors and workers present during the operation, along with records of site inspections and structural safety assessments, but these details have not yet been completely provided.
In response to the incident, MMRDA has suspended an engineer. Police have requested clarification on the reasons for this action and whether any prior safety concerns had been flagged. Several individuals, including project directors, managers, engineers, and a welder associated with the contractor and consultant teams, have been named in the case on allegations of negligence.
Police maintain that the parapet was erected without ensuring adequate support and that those responsible were aware of the potential hazards. Legal proceedings are ongoing as the investigation continues.
Metro Line 4 is a major infrastructure project intended to enhance east-west connectivity in Mumbai. The latest accident has renewed scrutiny over construction oversight and compliance with safety standards in large-scale public works.
