Commuters and local residents have expressed concern over persistent dust pollution along the western end of Hans Bhugra Marg in Santacruz East, where multiple infrastructure works are underway. Despite measures such as regular sprinkling of water on the road, many say the situation remains unchanged.
Efforts were made to seek clarification from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority and the H East ward of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation regarding dust mitigation steps at the site. However, no response was received until the time of publication.
Ongoing Works in the Area
Several projects are currently in progress along this approximately 1-kilometre stretch. These include construction of a connector linking Bharat Nagar with the SCLR, as well as concreting work between University Gate 1 and Bharat Nagar Road. Trucks frequently move in and out near Gate 2, adding to the movement of loose soil. Mud has also been placed on the divider beneath the SCLR, while pavement blocks lie stacked along parts of the footpath.
Commuters Share Their Concerns

Rahul Singh, who operates a roadside plant nursery, said, “Authorities water the road, but that doesn’t change much. The water evaporates quickly, making the dust rise again. Every two days, I have to clean my plant pots because of the sheer amount of dust being kicked up. Wearing masks is suffocating, and not wearing them causes us to inhale dust.”
Chote Lal Yadav, a taxi driver, highlighted the difficulty faced by non-air-conditioned vehicle operators. “Because my taxi is not air-conditioned, I have to keep the window open. However, dust enters our vehicles, and we breathe it in. If I keep the windows closed, the car is an oven on wheels. Every time I get passengers who want to go to South Mumbai, I am glad because it lets me get away from the dust on this road.”
