Mumbai is gearing up for a massive 70-hectare waterfront park along the reclaimed land of the Coastal Road, creating a continuous public green space from Priyadarshini Park near Nepeansea Road, passing Mahalaxmi and Haji Ali, all the way to Worli. Urban planners have dubbed it the city’s “Green Necklace,” inspired by Marine Drive’s iconic Queen’s Necklace. The project, estimated at ₹400 crore, is being developed by Reliance Industries Ltd under its Corporate Social Responsibility program. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has signed an expression of interest with RIL for masterplan preparation, shortlisting six international design firms for the proposal.
The park will feature nearly 60,000 trees, with 55% of the area dedicated to forests and wooded zones, 25% for open recreational spaces, and 20% for pathways, plazas, and essential amenities. The landscaping emphasizes native coastal species capable of surviving wind, saline soil, and sea spray, avoiding exotic plants, while sustainable practices will guide irrigation, construction materials, and maintenance.
Children’s play areas, sports zones, maidans, and pet parks will be evenly distributed for easy access. Sports clusters are planned near Nepeansea Road, Haji Ali, and Worli, while Bhulabhai Desai junction will host dense forests, elevated zones, beach-facing areas, and sports courts. Biodiversity-focused features include Miyawaki micro-forests, bird trails, and amphitheatres for public events.
Near Amarson’s Garden, a shaded promenade and maidan are planned, while the Mahalaxmi precinct will feature natural wooded areas and quiet spaces near the temple. Haji Ali will gain green zones with sunset viewpoints, and a large plaza above underground parking for 1,200 vehicles near Mahalaxmi Racecourse will serve as an event hub.
The park will narrow near the Bandra-Worli Sea Link but retain shaded walkways, art installations, and spaces for local artists. At the Worli gateway, refreshment kiosks, food trucks, and a festival plaza with attractions like a Ferris wheel overlooking the Arabian Sea are proposed, making the Coastal Road waterfront an ecological, recreational, and vibrant public space for Mumbai residents.
