Bellasis Flyover Linking Tardeo & Mumbai Central To Open Today, 15 Months Ahead Of Schedule

South Mumbai is set to receive a major connectivity upgrade as the Bellasis flyover, linking Tardeo and Mumbai Central railway station, will be inaugurated today. The ceremony will take place at 11 am and will be conducted online by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis along with Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, in the presence of Mayor Ritu Tawde. Civic officials said that once the stage setup and barricades are cleared after the event, the bridge will be opened for public use.

The project has drawn attention for being completed 15 months ahead of its scheduled deadline. Although construction concluded last month, the inauguration was deferred due to the Chief Minister’s schedule and discussions surrounding a possible renaming of the structure. The flyover is currently described as the railway bridge connecting Tardeo-Nagpada and Mumbai Central, with no official reference to the name Bellasis.

Spanning 333 metres in total length, the bridge includes 138.39 metres on the eastern side and 157.39 metres on the western side, along with a 36.90-metre stretch over the railway tracks. It features a 7-metre-wide carriageway and broad footpaths on both sides to ensure safer pedestrian access.

The new structure replaces a bridge originally constructed in 1893. Following a structural audit that found the old bridge unsafe, it was dismantled in June 2024. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation rebuilt the crossing as a modern cable-stayed bridge aimed at strengthening east-west connectivity between Nagpada and Tardeo.

The early completion of the flyover marks a significant milestone for Mumbai’s urban infrastructure, promising smoother traffic flow and improved commuter movement in a densely populated corridor of the city.
