CM Fadnavis & Dy CM Shinde Unveils 333-Metre Flyover At Mumbai Central, Restoring East-West Link After Two Years

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today virtually inaugurated the Tardeo-Nagpada-Mumbai Central flyover, a key east-west artery in south Mumbai aimed at improving daily commutes for thousands of residents. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde joined the virtual ceremony.

The new flyover replaces the 130-year-old British-era bridge at Mumbai Central, which had been deemed unsafe and dismantled, disrupting connectivity for the past two years. The structure is expected to reduce congestion on Jehangir Boman Behram Road, Dr Dadasaheb Bhadkamkar Marg, Pathe Bapurao Marg, and the Mahalaxmi station bridge.

Spanning 333 metres in total, the flyover includes 138.39 metres on the eastern side, 157.39 metres on the western side, and 36.90 metres within railway limits. Its seven-metre-wide carriageway features broad footpaths on both sides, enhancing safety and pedestrian movement. Built as a modern cable-stayed bridge, the flyover links Tardeo, Nagpada, and Mumbai Central, three of the city’s busiest localities.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) completed the project in a record 15 months and six days, four months ahead of the scheduled deadline. Work on the railway tracks was coordinated with railway authorities, while the civic body handled girder bracing, deck installation, slab casting, and construction of approach roads.

Officials noted that the project faced multiple challenges, requiring close collaboration among the BMC’s bridges department, railway officials, local ward offices, and traffic police.

Safety and operational readiness were ensured through load testing, structural stability assessments, and obtaining a no-objection certificate from the railway authorities. The flyover’s completion restores a vital east-west corridor, promising smoother traffic flow and improved connectivity across south Mumbai.
