The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has been invited to present the Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s large-scale urban transformation at the 10th World Cities Summit, scheduled to take place in Singapore from June 14 to 16, 2026.
The invitation was extended by Singapore’s Centre for Liveable Cities, signalling international recognition of the region’s rapid infrastructure growth. The acknowledgment comes amid major development initiatives undertaken during the tenure of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who also serves as chairman of MMRDA.
Michael Koh, Executive Fellow at the Centre for Liveable Cities, formally conveyed the invitation to Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA, during a recent meeting regarding the upcoming summit.
The World Cities Summit is jointly organised by the Centre for Liveable Cities and Singapore’s Urban Redevelopment Authority. The event convenes government representatives, mayors and urban planners from more than 250 cities worldwide to deliberate on strategies for building sustainable and liveable urban environments.
This year’s theme, “Liveable and Sustainable Cities: ACT Now,” underscores the urgency of collaborative action to accelerate urban transformation. Across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, MMRDA has been driving extensive infrastructure expansion, including metro rail networks, transit-oriented development models and climate-resilient urban planning initiatives.
Recently, the authority presented a Rs 48,072 crore surplus budget for 2026-27, allocating nearly 87% toward infrastructure development.
Koh acknowledged the magnitude of change underway in the region and invited Dr Mukherjee to highlight MMRDA’s integrated planning framework on the global platform.
The Centre for Liveable Cities has also indicated interest in collaborating with MMRDA to exchange expertise and resources in sustainable city-building. Dr Mukherjee accepted the invitation, reiterating the authority’s commitment to strengthening global partnerships and positioning the Mumbai Metropolitan Region as a future-ready metropolitan model.
