BMC Accelerates Construction Of 906 Rehab Flats For GMLR Project-Affected Families

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has stepped up work on a housing project in Kanjurmarg West to rehabilitate residents whose homes are affected by the Goregaon–Mulund Link Road (GMLR).

According to civic officials, the rehabilitation project involves the construction of 906 residential units across seven buildings on a plot measuring about 10,050 square metres. Each building will have a structure comprising a ground floor and 23 upper floors. The flats are being developed to relocate families displaced by the ongoing infrastructure project.

The civic body said the housing initiative is intended to provide safe and planned accommodation to citizens impacted by the road development project. Each apartment will have a carpet area of approximately 300 square feet and will include a living space, a bedroom with an attached bathroom and a kitchen.

In addition to residential units, the complex will include several community facilities for residents. These include a market area, a community hall, a library, a health centre and a sewage treatment plant.

To review progress at the site, Abhijit Bangar conducted an inspection of the construction work on March 6. During the visit, he assessed various aspects of the project including the internal structure of the buildings, water supply arrangements, sanitation systems, electrical connections, lift installations, staircases and fire safety provisions.

Bangar instructed officials to ensure that construction work is completed within the scheduled timeframe so that the flats can be handed over to eligible families at the earliest.

Officials said two of the buildings are nearing completion, and rehabilitation of about 252 residents is expected to take place by the end of March 2026. The remaining structures are likely to receive completion certificates by April 2026.

The GMLR project is being executed in multiple phases to improve connectivity between Mumbai’s eastern and western suburbs. As part of Phase 3, excavation work using tunnel boring machines is scheduled to begin in June 2026.

Before tunnelling work begins, residents from the Amar Nagar area will be relocated to the newly constructed buildings in Kanjurmarg West.

The BMC said the rehabilitation effort also focuses on providing supporting civic infrastructure such as internal roads, open spaces and community amenities to ensure that relocated families can move into functional housing with basic facilities in place.
