Traffic authorities in Mumbai have issued a safety alert for commuters after a hazardous mixture of oil and sewage residue spilled onto a key road near the Bhandup Pumping Station junction in the eastern suburbs. The spill created extremely slippery conditions on the roadway, prompting officials to warn motorists and regulate traffic along the busy route.
According to civic officials monitoring the situation, the spill occurred during ongoing sewer infrastructure work in the area. A combination of oily residue and drainage sludge reportedly spread across the road surface while maintenance activities linked to underground sewer lines were underway. The resulting conditions significantly increased the chances of vehicles skidding, especially for two-wheeler riders travelling through the corridor during peak hours.
Soon after the incident was reported, traffic authorities urged motorists to drive cautiously, reduce speed, and maintain safe distances while passing through the affected stretch. Personnel were deployed on the ground to manage traffic flow and guide vehicles safely until the road surface could be cleared and stabilised.
Urban infrastructure experts note that such incidents often highlight the operational challenges involved in upgrading ageing underground utilities. Sewer rehabilitation and drainage improvement projects are necessary to strengthen sanitation systems and reduce flooding risks, but they also require strict safety protocols and careful traffic coordination to prevent hazards on active roadways.
The affected junction is located close to important transport links connecting residential neighbourhoods in eastern Mumbai with major commercial and employment hubs across the metropolitan region. Even brief disruptions at such points can lead to congestion across nearby roads.
Officials indicated that the spill occurred as part of work aimed at strengthening the city’s sewerage network. In recent years, the civic administration has been gradually upgrading drainage infrastructure to improve resilience against flooding and pollution, particularly during the monsoon season.
Meanwhile, traffic police also reported congestion at other locations across the city due to separate incidents, including a vehicle collision on a southbound bridge corridor in south Mumbai and a breakdown near Kurla. Teams were deployed to remove the vehicles and restore traffic movement.
Authorities have advised commuters to remain cautious while travelling through the Bhandup stretch until the road is fully cleaned and normal conditions are restored.
