Maharashtra Plans 100-Acre Tourism Hub At Gorai In Mumbai

The Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation is leading plans to develop a 100-acre land parcel at Gorai into a large tourism destination in suburban Mumbai. The project has been proposed by the Government of Maharashtra as part of efforts to strengthen tourism infrastructure in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Authorities plan to create an integrated destination combining recreation, hospitality, leisure and visitor-support facilities within a single development. The project is intended to emerge as a major tourism asset for the region while expanding tourism opportunities in and around Mumbai.

A detailed master plan for the site is currently being prepared. This document will determine the overall layout of the project, including land allocation for recreational spaces, landscaped areas, hotels, utilities and parking facilities. Officials are also examining issues such as public accessibility, internal circulation and phased development to ensure that the project progresses in an organised manner.

Planners aim to maintain a balance between open spaces and built infrastructure so that the site develops in a structured and sustainable way. Adventure activity zones, outdoor recreation areas, parks and tourism-focused amenities are expected to form part of the destination. Commercial components and food and beverage outlets are also under consideration to support a complete visitor ecosystem.

The Gorai location has been identified as suitable for such a project because of its coastal setting, sizeable land availability and proximity to Mumbai’s large urban population. Officials believe these advantages could help attract both domestic and international visitors if the project is developed according to contemporary tourism standards.

To move the initiative forward, authorities have begun the process of appointing a transaction advisor. The consultant will assist with preparing a conceptual master plan, conducting site assessments, developing project themes and carrying out feasibility studies.

The advisor will also help identify potential investors and manage the bidding process. A concession model is expected to be designed to facilitate private investment while maintaining financial viability and transparency.

Alongside this, a comprehensive market assessment will examine tourism trends, investor interest and possible revenue streams. The findings will help determine the appropriate structure for public and private participation.

Environmental considerations are also being incorporated into the planning process. Officials say the project is intended to align with global tourism practices while ensuring responsible development. Over the long term, the initiative aims to create not only a visitor attraction but also a productive public space that generates economic and social benefits for the state.
