Goregaon’s Mrunaltai Gore Flyover Cost Rises To Rs 248 Crore, Set To Open Next Month

The extended Mrunaltai Gore Flyover in Goregaon is nearing completion, with authorities expecting it to open next month. The project’s cost has surged from Rs 209 crore to Rs 248 crore, reflecting structural and utility-related upgrades. Stretching along S. V. Road from Ram Mandir Road to Relief Road, the flyover aims to ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity in one of Goregaon’s busiest corridors.

Extension Work and Project Background

The original Mrunaltai Gore Flyover, completed in 2016 at a cost of Rs 255 crore, was executed by the BMC with land acquired via the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). Following the success of the first phase, the extension along S. V. Road from Ram Mandir Road to Relief Road began construction in March 2019. The flyover passes through heavily congested junctions, making it a critical traffic artery. The construction is being carried out by MEPL-Gyan, a joint venture tasked with the project.

Structural Challenges and Cost Escalation

Space constraints and the need for rapid construction led engineers to use MS structural steel for the superstructure. During the project, essential underground utilities such as water pipelines, cables, and drainage systems had to be relocated.

“Spanning the Valbhat River at Ram Mandir Road and the Oshiwara River along S. V. Road, the structure faced high corrosion risks from water and tidal exposure. To enhance durability, stainless steel girders were installed over both rivers. A 900 mm old sewage pipeline was also replaced, along with other structural improvements, contributing to the increase in project costs,” said a civic official.

Key Specifications

  • Length: 750 metres
  • Width: 15.50 metres
  • Number of spans: 29
  • Piers/Foundation: RCC piles with open foundation
  • Deck Surfacing: Mastic, DBM, and mastic layers

Once operational, the flyover is expected to drastically reduce congestion and provide smoother connectivity between Ram Mandir Road and Goregaon West, benefiting thousands of daily commuters.
