Vakola–BKC Elevated Road Opening Pushed To April Amid Pending Work

The much-anticipated elevated corridor linking Vakola to Bandra-Kurla Complex has been delayed, with authorities now indicating that the project will open to traffic in April rather than the previously announced March deadline.

The project, which forms part of the extension of the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road, is considered a key infrastructure upgrade aimed at easing congestion and improving connectivity between Mumbai’s eastern and western suburbs.

According to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the delay is due to pending technical work. A critical girder still needs to be installed near the Western Express Highway in the Vakola stretch. Because the road alignment at this point is curved, the installation requires careful execution.

Officials said the remaining work will be carried out by imposing a temporary traffic block in the area, resulting in a slight extension of the project timeline.

The elevated road spans approximately 1.2 kilometres and is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 645 crore. It will feature two lanes in each direction, ensuring smoother traffic flow across the corridor.

Once operational, the route will link key junctions, including Vakola Junction, Ambedkar Chowk, the university area, and BKC, offering a more direct and efficient travel option for commuters.

Currently, travel between Santacruz and BKC can take 30 to 35 minutes during peak hours. The new signal-free corridor is expected to cut this time down to just 5 to 10 minutes, allowing vehicles to move without frequent stops and reducing congestion on surrounding roads.

In addition to improving access to BKC, the elevated stretch will provide an alternative route for motorists using the Western Express Highway, including those travelling towards northern suburbs like Dahisar. Overall, the project is expected to play a crucial role in easing traffic pressure and enhancing cross-city connectivity in Mumbai.
