Commuters in Mumbai’s eastern suburbs can expect smoother travel in the coming years, as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation accelerates work on additional flyover arms at the heavily congested T junction along the Sion–Panvel Highway.
According to a report by The Indian Express, two of the proposed flyover arms are likely to be completed by January 2027, while the remaining two are pending approvals from railway authorities. The project is expected to significantly ease traffic flow between key routes connecting Ghatkopar, Mankhurd, Vashi, and Pune-bound corridors.
The T junction has long been a bottleneck, particularly for commuters travelling from Mumbai towards Navi Mumbai and beyond. To address this, the civic body has undertaken a multi-phase plan to construct four dedicated flyover arms that will help streamline vehicular movement and reduce congestion.
Work on the first phase—comprising Arm 1 and Arm 2—began in October 2024. Foundation activities are currently underway, alongside parallel fabrication work at off-site facilities. Arm 1, spanning 1,420 metres, will enable smoother traffic movement from Ghatkopar and Mankhurd towards Vashi. Arm 2, at 1,951 metres, is designed to facilitate traffic flow from Vashi towards Ghatkopar via the Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road flyover.
The remaining two arms are planned to improve connectivity for commuters from areas such as Cheetah Camp and Maharashtra Nagar, though their construction is contingent on railway clearances.
Once completed, all four two-lane flyover arms are expected to redistribute traffic more efficiently, reducing travel time by 10 to 15 minutes. A BMC official noted that the project’s primary goal is to ease congestion at the junction while also lowering fuel consumption and vehicular emissions by cutting down on idle time.
