BMC Holds Back Cost Escalation For Goregaon Flyover Extension Project

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declined a proposal seeking approval for an additional Rs 7.9 crore in cost escalation for the Goregaon flyover extension project. The proposal was discussed during the standing committee meeting earlier this week.

The extension involves the Mrinaltai Gore Flyover along SV Road, between Ram Mandir Road and Relief Road. The project, which has been under execution for several years, has already seen multiple revisions in its estimated cost. Originally sanctioned at around Rs 209 crore, the total expenditure has risen over time due to design modifications, site challenges, and delays in implementation.

During the meeting, standing committee members questioned the rationale behind the proposed cost escalation and chose not to approve it. The committee chairperson instructed civic officials to conduct a detailed site inspection and submit a revised assessment for future consideration.

The Goregaon flyover extension has frequently been scrutinized for repeated cost revisions, execution delays, and project management concerns. Local representatives have highlighted issues related to planning efficiency and the roles of contractors and consultants in driving project costs. Such factors have intensified oversight of financial proposals linked to the development.

With the latest decision, the additional Rs 7.9 crore request remains on hold. Further progress will depend on the outcome of the site inspection and the revised assessment that officials are expected to present. The standing committee will deliberate on the updated report before any approval is granted, ensuring greater transparency and accountability in project execution.

This move reflects the BMC’s cautious approach toward escalating infrastructure costs amid ongoing concerns about timely completion and budget management for key urban projects.
