The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a comprehensive plan to modernise and streamline traffic operations across the city, covering both eastern and western suburbs. As part of this initiative, the civic body has floated a Rs 33 crore tender for the maintenance and enhancement of Area Traffic Control (ATC) signal systems and non-ATC roads. The project is set to run for two years, from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2028, under the supervision of the BMC Traffic Department to ensure smooth execution.
The program will include preventive and corrective maintenance of all signal junctions, along with upgrades to vehicle and pedestrian signals. Advanced vehicle detection cameras will be installed and maintained to optimize traffic flow. The scope also covers repairing or replacing damaged signal controllers, poles, cables, and cameras, as well as trenching, pipeline laying, and signal shifting necessitated by other civic infrastructure projects. Contractors will be responsible for any repairs due to accidents to maintain uninterrupted operations.
“This project will make Mumbai’s traffic management system smarter, faster, and more efficient,” said a senior BMC official. The contractor will ensure all signal junctions function in a fully adaptive mode, adjusting in real time to traffic conditions.
The tender also includes the installation of new traffic signal junctions, with thorough testing and commissioning. Regular upkeep of signal poles, controllers, cables, and power supply systems, as well as routine cleaning, will be mandatory. Officials emphasize that this initiative will strengthen the long-term reliability of the city’s traffic infrastructure and improve road safety and commuter experience across Mumbai.
This move aligns with the BMC’s broader push for smart city initiatives and digital integration in urban traffic management.
