Mumbai is set to witness a major boost in east–west connectivity, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) planning a 5.5-km high-speed corridor between Goregaon (Film City) and Magathane. Designed as a greenfield project, the proposed stretch will run parallel to the Western Express Highway (WEH) and is expected to significantly reduce travel time between the city’s eastern and western suburbs.
The new corridor will serve as a crucial connector, linking the upcoming Mumbai Coastal Road (Versova–Bhayander) with the Goregaon Mulund Link Road (GMLR). Unlike upgrades to existing roads, this route will be built entirely from scratch to ensure high-speed, uninterrupted travel. Civic officials highlighted that both the Eastern and Western Express Highways are currently overburdened, making the need for alternate routes critical to easing congestion.
“This road will act as a direct gateway between the coastal road and GMLR. The coastal road will have a vehicular arm traversing to the eastern side. This arm will merge with the nodal point of this corridor at Magathane providing motorists a direct entry to the corridor. From there, motorists will be able to go straight and enter the GMLR from the twin tunnel being constructed at Film City in Goregaon. Going forward the GMLR will provide direct connectivity towards Mulund in the eastern suburbs and Airoli in the MMR region,” said a senior official privy to the project.
The corridor is envisioned as part of a broader effort to integrate Mumbai’s major arterial roads and high-speed routes into a seamless network. Officials noted that without such alternative links, congestion on existing highways will continue to worsen. Once operational, the new route is expected to cut travel time to under 10 minutes—a significant improvement compared to the current journey of over an hour via highways and internal roads.
