Mumbai is moving ahead with an ambitious plan to create four landmark entry gateways at Dahisar, Vashi, Airoli and Mulund, aimed at redefining the city’s entry points while upgrading surrounding infrastructure. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has directed its departments to submit detailed design concepts within 15 days.
Airoli Project to Be Prioritised
Among the four locations, the Airoli gateway will be taken up first, with officials indicating that its progress will set the benchmark for similar developments at the other entry points. The gateways are envisioned not just as architectural icons but also as catalysts for urban improvement and enhanced public spaces.
Focus on Urban Development and Tourism
A high-level meeting held at the BMC headquarters on March 25 brought together senior officials and representatives from multiple agencies to deliberate on the project. Discussions focused on identifying precise locations, integrating existing and upcoming infrastructure, and improving adjacent areas through landscaping and better civic amenities.
The plan also emphasises increasing green cover, enhancing visual appeal, and unlocking tourism potential around these gateways. Seamless coordination between various departments will be critical to ensure efficient execution of the project.
Funding Strategy and Revenue Potential
To ease financial pressure on municipal resources, the civic body is exploring funding through corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. Officials believe that the gateways, once completed, could help generate revenue by attracting visitors and boosting the city’s overall appeal.
