Mumbai To Build 5.5 Km High-Speed Link Connecting Coastal Road & GMLR, Completion By 2029

Mumbai is set to strengthen its east–west connectivity with a new 5.5-kilometre high-speed corridor planned by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The proposed stretch will run parallel to the Western Express Highway (WEH), linking Film City in Goregaon to Magathane, according to a report by The Indian Express.

Envisioned as a greenfield development, the corridor will be constructed entirely from the ground up, rather than upgrading an existing road. It is designed to function as a key arterial link connecting the island city, eastern and western suburbs, and the broader Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

A central feature of the project is its role as a connector between two major infrastructure initiatives—the Versova-Bhayander extension of the Mumbai Coastal Road and the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR).

How the Corridor Will Function

As reported by The Indian Express, a senior official privy to the project described the corridor as a direct gateway between the coastal road and the GMLR.

A vehicular arm from the coastal road will extend eastward and merge with the corridor at Magathane. From there, commuters will be able to access the GMLR via a twin tunnel under construction at Film City in Goregaon, which will further link to Mulund and Airoli in the MMR.

The official told the publication that the broader objective is to create seamless integration among Mumbai’s major arterial roads and high-speed corridors.

Addressing Congestion and Future Demand

Officials highlighted that both the Eastern and Western Express Highways are currently operating under heavy traffic loads. Without additional connectors, congestion is expected to worsen. The new corridor is intended to ease this burden by offering a faster alternative route.

Timeline and Wider Network

Preliminary planning has been completed, though some encroachments along the alignment need to be cleared before final cost estimates and tendering begin. The project is expected to be completed by mid-2029.

This corridor will form part of a larger infrastructure network, including the 25-km Versova-Bhayander Coastal Road stretch and the 12.2-km GMLR, alongside upcoming links in Navi Mumbai, further enhancing regional connectivity.
