The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a strict directive for the immediate handover of a plot earmarked for a fire station in Andheri West, setting a seven-day deadline to complete the process. The civic body has emphasised that any delay will not be tolerated, given the project’s importance in strengthening emergency response infrastructure in Mumbai’s western suburbs.
Officials have clarified that if the land is not transferred within the stipulated timeframe, the administration will initiate legal acquisition under applicable provisions. This step, they noted, is essential to ensure that land reserved for critical public services is utilised without further delay.
The plot has been designated for a fire station under Mumbai’s development plan for several years. However, the prolonged delay in transferring ownership has stalled the project’s execution. This comes at a time when Andheri West is witnessing rapid growth in residential high-rises, commercial hubs, and mixed-use developments.
Civic authorities highlighted that the absence of a nearby fire station significantly increases response times during emergencies. In dense urban pockets like Andheri West—characterised by traffic congestion, narrow internal roads, and vertical expansion—quick access to firefighting services is crucial. The proposed facility is expected to enhance response efficiency and improve safety for both residents and businesses.
The BMC also indicated that similar delays have affected other reserved plots across the city, including those meant for schools, playgrounds, and emergency services. In several cases, issues such as ownership disputes and administrative bottlenecks have slowed progress, often requiring legal intervention.
With Mumbai’s growing urban density placing added pressure on fire safety infrastructure, the BMC has been working to expand and modernise its network of fire stations. The latest directive signals a more assertive stance by the civic body to fast-track essential public safety projects and ensure timely utilisation of reserved land.
