In a major push to strengthen public education, the state government has announced plans to upgrade 405 local body schools into Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Model Schools. The initiative focuses on improving infrastructure, boosting enrolment, and enhancing overall learning outcomes across government-run institutions.
As part of the upgrade, schools will see significant improvements in basic facilities. These include the installation of RO and UV-based water purification systems to ensure safe drinking water, along with the introduction of “Pink Rooms” to provide female students with dedicated spaces for menstrual hygiene and privacy.
Beyond infrastructure, the programme also aims to promote sports development. A model sports academy will be set up in every district to nurture talent and provide structured training opportunities for students.
To address falling enrolment in government schools, the education department has outlined a targeted outreach strategy. Teachers and officials will conduct door-to-door visits to identify out-of-school children and encourage their admission. Recognising evolving parental preferences, there will also be a stronger focus on English language education within these schools.
The initiative includes financial incentives as well. Families enrolling their children in government schools may receive local tax exemptions at the Gram Panchayat and Zilla Panchayat levels, making public education more attractive.
To create a welcoming environment at the start of each academic year, schools will organise a ‘School Pravesh’ festival on the first day of classes. The programme also encourages the formation of alumni networks, enabling former students to contribute through mentorship and support for infrastructure upgrades.
Additionally, the state will recognise schools and teachers that excel in increasing enrolment and maintaining high academic standards, ensuring sustained momentum for reform efforts.
