Atal Setu Records Over 2 Crore Vehicle Crossings, Emerges As Key Commuter Corridor

Marking a major milestone in Mumbai’s infrastructure landscape, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has announced that the Atal Setu, India’s longest sea bridge, has registered more than 2 crore vehicle movements since its inauguration in January 2024. According to the authority, the 20,000,316th vehicle crossed the bridge on March 27, 2026, underscoring its growing importance as a key transport link within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

The steady rise in traffic highlights the bridge’s role in easing daily commutes and strengthening connectivity between major urban nodes. Data shared by the authority shows that private vehicles dominate usage, accounting for nearly 91% of total crossings. Passenger cars alone contributed 1,81,95,718 trips, indicating strong adoption among daily commuters. Light commercial vehicles, minibuses and buses together recorded 5,98,525 crossings, while medium, heavy and oversized vehicles accounted for 12,06,073 trips, reflecting the structure’s increasing role in facilitating goods movement and improving logistics efficiency.

The sea bridge was inaugurated by Narendra Modi on January 13, 2024. It connects Sewri in South Mumbai to Chirle in Navi Mumbai, significantly reducing travel time between the two points from nearly an hour to under 20 minutes. This improved connectivity has helped decongest existing routes while offering a faster and more reliable commuting option.

Officials said the project has gone beyond its role as a transport corridor, contributing to broader economic and operational efficiencies. They noted that the bridge has helped streamline logistics, support trade and commerce, reduce fuel consumption and ease congestion across the region.

Within a little over two years of operations, authorities believe the Atal Setu has not only transformed travel patterns but also strengthened regional integration, positioning it as a critical asset in Maharashtra’s long-term infrastructure development strategy.
