Ajinkya Naik, president of the Mumbai Cricket Association, has held discussions with state government officials to fast-track plans for a proposed 1 lakh-capacity cricket stadium in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
As part of the initiative, Naik recently met officials from the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Ltd to review progress and explore ways to accelerate the long-pending mega project. The proposed stadium is expected to be one of the largest in the country, significantly boosting the region’s sporting infrastructure.
The project has been under consideration for some time, and the latest round of discussions signals renewed momentum. Officials are working towards finalising key aspects, including land allocation, planning, and execution timelines, to move the proposal closer to implementation.
“This initiative marks a defining moment for Maharashtra’s sporting ecosystem. A 1 lakh capacity stadium in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region will not only elevate Mumbai cricket but also firmly position Maharashtra on the global sporting map.
“This world-class infrastructure will create unparalleled opportunities for player level.
The development of such a large-scale venue is expected to enhance Mumbai’s ability to host major national and international cricket events, while also strengthening grassroots and professional-level opportunities for players.
If realised, the stadium could become a landmark addition to the MMR’s sports infrastructure, aligning with broader efforts to position Maharashtra as a key hub for global sporting events.
