Mumbai’s Rs 370 Billion Aqua Line Faces Early Maintenance & Safety Concerns

Mumbai’s costliest metro project, the Mumbai Metro Aqua Line, is reportedly encountering multiple structural and maintenance issues within months of becoming operational. Stretching 33.5 km underground from Aarey JVLR to Cuffe Parade and spanning 27 stations, the corridor was launched in phases between October 2024 and October 2025, raising expectations of a world-class transit system.

However, recent reports suggest that several stations are already showing signs of deterioration. Facilities such as washrooms have developed visible faults, with marble panels above urinals falling off and exposing unfinished concrete and corroded fittings. Temporary fixes, including torn cardboard inserts, have been used in some cases. At stations like SEEPZ and MIDC, leaking pipes are reportedly being managed with plastic buckets placed beneath counters.

Structural concerns extend to cracked grout lines, chipped tiles, and damaged flooring across corridors and staircases—indicating possible construction-related issues rather than regular wear and tear. Water seepage has also been observed in underground areas, leading to damp walls, stains, and dark patches on ceilings, raising concerns about waterproofing quality.

In some locations, loose metal fixtures have been seen hanging from ceilings, while gaps have emerged between escalators and adjacent walls. At Churchgate station, a granite tile is reportedly hanging above a seating area, adding to commuter safety worries. Essential services, including lifts and air-conditioning systems, have also faced intermittent disruptions.

Acharya Atrey Chowk station has emerged as a particularly problematic spot, with incomplete entry points and staircase designs considered unsafe for elderly commuters. Ongoing roadwork outside further complicates access, while passengers have reported sewage-like odours and persistent leaks inside.

Despite continuous cleaning efforts by staff, concerns remain over safety and durability. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited has not responded to queries, leaving commuters calling for reliable infrastructure and basic functionality over premium finishes.
