Mumbai witnessed a major boost to its transport infrastructure as Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated multiple mobility projects, including two metro corridors, a tunnel initiative, and a pod taxi system. The developments are aimed at improving connectivity and reducing congestion across the city.
Phase I of Metro Line 9, connecting Dahisar to Kashigaon, was launched, extending metro access towards Mira-Bhayandar. At the same time, Phase I of Metro Line 2B between Diamond Garden and Mandale was also opened for operations. The twin launches were carried out in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and other officials.
The event also marked the launch of a tunnel boring machine for the Thane-Borivali twin tunnel project. The ambitious project, which includes tunnels beneath the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, is expected to significantly cut travel time and ease congestion between Thane and Borivali.
In addition, the foundation ceremony was conducted for the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) pod taxi project, officially known as the Automated Rapid Transit System (ARTS). The system will feature small, air-conditioned pods carrying up to six passengers, with stations planned at short intervals to provide quick, point-to-point connectivity within the business district.
Calling the occasion a “historic day,” Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said Mumbai now has over 100 km of operational metro lines, making it the second-largest network in the country after Delhi. He also stated that most ongoing metro projects are expected to be completed within two years, with plans to surpass Delhi’s network size in the near future.
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said, “This is a historic day for reducing traffic congestion in Mumbai.”
Despite the high-profile event, traffic disruptions were minimal, with only brief slowdowns reported near Dahisar East station. Police ensured smooth movement, while officials clarified that authorised personnel accessed the venue without any issues.
These projects collectively mark a significant step towards a more efficient and integrated urban transport system for Mumbai.
