Mumbai’s metro network expanded further on April 7 as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) commenced operations on Metro Lines 2B and 9, bringing relief to commuters in the eastern suburbs and the Mira-Bhayander region. The launch is expected to provide a faster, smoother, and more reliable mode of transport for lakhs of daily passengers grappling with congested roads.
The newly operational stretches are set to significantly cut travel time and improve overall connectivity, making daily commutes more efficient. With better integration into the existing metro network, these lines are poised to transform travel across key parts of the city.
Metro Line 9 spans a 4.5-km stretch between Dahisar and Kashigaon, covering four stations: Dahisar, Pandurang Wadi, Miragaon, and Kashigaon. The line enhances connectivity in the northern suburbs and links seamlessly with the Western Express Highway corridor. A key advantage for passengers is its direct integration with Line 7 at Dahisar, allowing commuters to travel towards Andheri East without needing to change trains. Additionally, an interchange with Line 2A is also available at Dahisar, further improving network connectivity.
Meanwhile, Metro Line 2B covers a 5.53-km stretch connecting Chembur to Mandale, with five stations along the route—Diamond Garden, Shivaji Chowk, BSNL Metro, Mankhurd, and Mandale. This line forms part of a larger 23.643-km corridor from DN Nagar to Mandale, which will eventually include 20 stations and strengthen east-west connectivity across Mumbai.
The introduction of these lines is expected to ease traffic congestion and improve last-mile connectivity for residents. Once fully operational, Metro Line 2B will link important hubs such as Mankhurd, Chembur, and Kurla, further enhancing accessibility.
Overall, the launch marks a significant step in Mumbai’s ongoing metro expansion, aimed at delivering a more connected and commuter-friendly transport system.
