Mumbai-Nagpur Trains To Run Faster As Railways Lifts Speed Curbs

Train services on the Mumbai–Nagpur route are set to become quicker after Indian Railways removed a long-standing speed restriction on a key stretch in Maharashtra. The move follows infrastructure upgrades aimed at improving both safety and operational efficiency across the corridor.

The restriction was lifted after the completion of Through Formation Treatment (TFTR) work on the Up line of the Asvali–Padli section, which falls under the Bhusaval Division of Central Railway. This section is a crucial part of the Mumbai–Nagpur rail route and has been limiting train speeds for years.

Speaking to Indianexpress.com, Dr Swapnil Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO), Central Railway, said that the Asvali-Padli section is a part of the Bhusaval Division and falls on the Mumbai-Nagpur rail route. “The speed restriction was for almost 800 meters and affected overall time,” he said. Railway officials noted that a Permanent Speed Restriction (PSR) of 75 kmph had been imposed for a long time between Kms 160.57 and 160.13, requiring continuous monitoring, especially during the monsoon.

The railway administration highlighted the engineering challenges involved in executing the upgrade. “The work posed considerable challenges as the section is situated in a semi-ghat area with limited accessibility. The track formation height is approximately 9 meters and includes a curve of 2.26 degrees. Considering these constraints, the work was strategically taken up for execution post monsoon in 2025,” it said.

In addition to infrastructure improvements, Central Railway has also expanded its special train operations. During the financial year 2025–26, it ran 8,840 special train trips, including 348 services during festive periods. It has further planned 2,169 Summer Special trains between April 15 and July 31, with 1,359 services dedicated to Maharashtra and the remainder connecting other states.
