Authorities Clear 1,200+ Encroachments Along Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road

In a large-scale demolition operation, authorities cleared more than 1,200 незаконно built huts along the Ghatkopar–Mankhurd Link Road in Mankhurd, leaving hundreds of families displaced. The drive took place in Annabhau Sathe Nagar, where homes were dismantled within hours under heavy security deployment.

Officials said the action covered nearly 11 acres of government land that had been occupied for several years. The operation was conducted on the directives of Mumbai Suburban Collector Saurabh Katiyar, in coordination with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and supported by a strong presence of Mumbai Police to maintain order.

Residents were seen gathering their belongings as structures were brought down, with many uncertain about rehabilitation arrangements. Authorities noted that action had been delayed earlier due to administrative commitments linked to multiple elections, including parliamentary, assembly, and civic polls.

A government officer said the administration has been using satellite imagery since 2011 to track unauthorised constructions. “With the help of modern technology, similar encroachments will be identified and acted upon promptly in the future,” the officer said.

According to Mangal Prabhat Lodha, the cleared land is planned for development of an “Adivasi Srushti” and a “Science Park”. He also alleged that land mafias have increasingly taken over government land through illegal construction activities. “In many cases, it has been observed that Bangladeshi and Rohingya individuals receive protection with the support of local elements. Such areas often become hubs for illegal narcotics trade and other anti-social activities. Similar large-scale unauthorised constructions have also been identified in Malad and Malvani, where strict action is underway,” he said.

The drive involved around 400 personnel, including officials from the revenue department, police, and civic agencies, ensuring the operation was carried out without major law-and-order disruptions.
