Mumbai is getting ready to welcome a brand-new suburban railway terminus for the first time in more than thirty years. The Jogeshwari Terminus, which is expected to open in November 2025, is a major step forward in the city’s continuous attempts to update its rail system and enhance connectivity in the western suburbs.
This is Mumbai’s first greenfield terminus since the opening of Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) in 1991. Once complete, the project will help decongest heavily burdened stations like Bandra, Dadar, and Mumbai Central, which currently handle the majority of long-distance passenger traffic.
Strategically located on the Western Line, between Andheri and Goregaon, the new terminus is being developed by Western Railway across a four-acre site. It will feature three platforms — two designated for mail and express trains, and one for stabling and maintenance — enabling the station to accommodate both originating and terminating long-distance services.
The selection of Jogeshwari as the location is highly calculated. With its excellent connectivity to the Western Express Highway, Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR), and proximity to both suburban rail and Metro lines, it stands as a promising multi-modal transport hub. The upcoming Metro Line 6 (Swami Samarth Nagar–Vikhroli) will further enhance east-west mobility, cementing Jogeshwari’s role in the city’s transit map.
For daily commuters, this means shorter travel times, reduced transfers, and more travel options. For the city, it represents a crucial step in the strategic redistribution of passenger traffic, particularly relieving pressure on Bandra Terminus, one of Mumbai’s busiest rail nodes.
Infrastructure projects of this scale often spur localised economic growth. Similar to developments seen around LTT and Borivali Terminus, areas surrounding Jogeshwari — especially Jogeshwari East — are likely to witness rising property values, increased retail interest, and boosted real estate demand.
Historically overshadowed by its neighbouring suburbs, Jogeshwari is now poised for transformation. Its improved transport links, affordable housing, and accessibility make it an attractive destination for investors, homebuyers, and retail developers alike.
In order to handle the demands of a fast expanding population and a congested suburban network, the Jogeshwari Terminus is a crucial component of a larger plan to establish satellite transit hubs throughout Mumbai. Western Railway’s dedication to building infrastructure that is fit for the future and places an emphasis on sustainability, decentralisation, and urban growth is reflected in the project.
The terminus will also offer seamless integration with Jogeshwari’s existing suburban platforms, providing a smoother interchange experience. Modern passenger amenities such as escalators, digital displays, waiting lounges, and spacious concourses are set to enhance overall commuter convenience.
As of April 2025, work on platforms, access roads, and essential infrastructure is underway, with authorities targeting completion by year-end, followed by testing and commissioning.
When the Jogeshwari Terminus is opened, it will not only improve transportation efficiency but also represent Mumbai’s changing infrastructure and its goal of being a contemporary, decentralised, and commuter-friendly city.
