Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday set a three-year deadline for the completion of all major infrastructure projects across the state, including the much-anticipated Borivali-Thane Twin Tunnel. The announcement was made during a high-level review meeting held at the Cabinet Hall in Vidhan Bhavan, which was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and other senior government officials.
Fadnavis stated that the Borivali-Thane tunnel would be completed by December 2028, aligning with the broader infrastructure acceleration plan. He stressed the importance of not only completing these projects within the stipulated timeline but also ensuring permanent rehabilitation for individuals and communities affected by construction.
The Borivali-Thane Twin Tunnel is set to be a transformative development for commuters. Spanning 11.84 kilometres, the tunnel will pass beneath the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, offering a direct, congestion-free route between the western and eastern suburbs of Mumbai. Once completed, the tunnel is expected to reduce travel time between Borivali and Thane from the current 60–90 minutes to just 15 minutes.
This project is part of Maharashtra’s ongoing efforts to modernise urban transport infrastructure and improve connectivity within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. By cutting down travel time and easing vehicular pressure on surface roads, the twin tunnel is projected to significantly benefit daily commuters and boost regional mobility.
Officials confirmed that planning and execution will proceed in a time-bound and environment-sensitive manner, given the ecological importance of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. The government is expected to coordinate with multiple agencies to ensure smooth implementation and compliance with environmental safeguards.
As the state intensifies its focus on infrastructure delivery, public attention will remain fixed on whether these ambitious timelines are met, especially for high-impact projects like the Borivali-Thane tunnel.
