July 9, 2025: Mumbai is witnessing a notable transformation in its transport infrastructure with the completion of the new ‘Sindoor Bridge’, built in place of the 154-year-old Carnac Bridge, which was earlier deemed structurally unsound and dismantled. The newly constructed bridge, near Masjid Bunder railway station, now links P. D’Mello Road to key areas of South Mumbai. It has been named in honour of India’s recent military success, Operation Sindoor, as per the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
The bridge is set to open to the public within two days, with a formal inauguration scheduled for 10am on Thursday, July 10, 2025. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, and Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar will be in attendance, alongside other senior ministers and elected representatives.
Supervised by BMC Additional Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar and the civic bridges department, construction was completed by 10 June 2025. The structure spans 328 metres, including a 70-metre steel girder above the railway tracks and a 230-metre approach on civic land.
Designed for both strength and visual appeal, the bridge is expected to ease long-standing east-west traffic congestion and improve access to high-density zones such as CST, Mohammed Ali Road, and Crawford Market. The steel girders, each weighing 550 metric tonnes, were successfully launched in collaboration with Central Railway during planned track blocks.
The project included a four-month construction window on the eastern side and passed all safety and durability tests. In homage to the city’s heritage, six stone artefacts from the original Carnac Bridge will be displayed on the new structure. The BMC has confirmed all technical, safety, and railway clearances have been secured.
