July 11, 2025: Three years after its initial approval, construction on a vital bridge linking Andheri West and Goregaon West is finally poised to commence. Despite receiving clearance from the Bombay High Court in May this year, the project now faces a significant hurdle — the presence of 2,500 slum dwellings along the proposed route.
However, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced plans to rehabilitate the affected residents, paving the way for work to begin as early as August, according to a report by the Hindustan Times.
As per BMC records, the bridge in question is a 500-metre cable-stayed structure to be built over the Oshiwara Creek. Estimated to cost Rs 499.20 crore, the six-lane bridge will link Millat Nagar in Andheri West with Bhagat Singh Nagar in Goregaon West. It is anticipated to significantly ease traffic congestion by offering an alternative route to the often-overburdened New Link Road. The bridge is also expected to improve overall connectivity between Andheri, Oshiwara, Lokhandwala and Goregaon.
Although sanctioned in late 2022, the project encountered considerable delays due to its location passing through ecologically sensitive zones. The planned route cuts across areas governed by Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) and No Development Zone (NDZ) restrictions, featuring mangroves, marshlands, and creek ecosystems. As a result, it required multiple rounds of environmental clearances before receiving the final go-ahead.
With rehabilitation measures now in progress and necessary permissions secured, the long-awaited infrastructure project is finally on the verge of taking shape, promising to enhance westward connectivity in Mumbai and reduce travel time for thousands of daily commuters.
