Mumbai-Goa Car Ferry Train To Redefine Road Travel From August 23

July 21, 2025: In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable mobility, Konkan Railway is poised to launch an innovative car ferry train service between Mumbai and Goa from 23 August. This first-of-its-kind initiative will allow private vehicles to be transported by train along with their owners, reducing the taxing road journey from over 20 hours to just 12. It marks a forward-thinking step in modernising intercity travel while aligning with eco-conscious urban planning goals.

The service will run between Kolad in Maharashtra and Verna in Goa, with specially designed trains capable of carrying up to 40 private cars across 20 custom-built wagons. Each vehicle will be securely fastened during the journey, and no one will be permitted to remain inside the cars for safety reasons. The transport fee is set at approximately Rs 7,875 per vehicle for a one-way trip.

Passengers will travel in dedicated coaches, with up to three people allowed per vehicle. Tickets are affordably priced at Rs 935 for air-conditioned 3AC class and Rs 190 for second class. Trains will depart Kolad in the evening and reach Verna by early morning, ensuring a comfortable overnight journey. The service will operate only if at least 16 cars are booked per trip.

Beyond convenience, this service aims to address road fatigue and highway safety while significantly reducing carbon emissions. By encouraging travellers to opt for rail over long car drives, it promotes a cleaner, more energy-efficient form of travel. It is particularly appealing to holidaymakers and frequent commuters seeking a stress-free alternative to highway travel.

This pioneering venture underscores Konkan Railway’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure. By combining passenger comfort with vehicle transport, the car ferry train promises to redefine travel between Mumbai and Goa—offering safety, efficiency, and environmental responsibility in equal measure.
