Mumbai Coastal Road Gets Two New Underground Parking Facilities

July 22, 2025: Mumbai’s ambitious Coastal Road Project is set to take a major step forward with the opening of two underground parking facilities located beneath the newly developed Worli promenade. Designed to ease long-standing parking issues, especially in high-traffic zones like the Worli Sea Face, the lots are expected to become operational later this month.

Out of four parking facilities originally proposed under the Coastal Road blueprint, the two at Worli are the first to be completed. Each structure has a capacity of approximately 198 vehicles, offering a total of 396 parking spaces. The lots are strategically located — one beneath the Bindu Madhav Thackeray Junction and the other opposite Worli Dairy — directly under the Coastal Road promenade. Entry and exit will be via Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road, popularly known as Worli Sea Face.

Final touches such as road surfacing and signage are underway. Once mechanical and electrical installations are complete, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will transfer maintenance responsibility to the G South Ward office. Officials from BMC’s Coastal Road Department confirmed that the goal is to make these lots operational within weeks.

Plans for similar facilities elsewhere have faced mixed progress. A proposed parking structure at Breach Candy was cancelled following local opposition. Meanwhile, a larger four-level underground parking facility at Haji Ali, with a planned capacity for 1,069 cars and 70 buses, is set to begin construction soon and will take an estimated two years to complete.

The opening of the Worli parking lots marks a key milestone in Mumbai’s push towards more efficient urban transport infrastructure. By offering dedicated parking solutions, the Coastal Road Project aims to ease congestion, support tourism, and contribute to a more organised and commuter-friendly cityscape.
