August 11, 2025: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has unveiled plans for a new high-speed expressway designed to dramatically cut travel times between Mumbai, Pune, and Bengaluru. Once completed, the Mumbai–Pune journey will take just 90 minutes, while the Pune–Bengaluru stretch will be achievable in around five hours.
In Pune district alone, road and highway projects worth Rs 50,000 crore are currently under construction. Across the wider region, infrastructure developments totalling Rs 2 lakh crore are progressing, with additional projects worth Rs 15,000 crore set to commence shortly and proposals for a further Rs 15,000 crore under review.
As part of the broader infrastructure push, elevated road corridors are planned within Pune to tackle severe traffic congestion. Expansion of Pune Airport is also on the agenda. Gadkari acknowledged that land acquisition presents a significant hurdle but emphasised that strong political will and effective coordination could resolve such challenges.
The new expressway will originate at the Atal Tunnel in Mumbai, link with the Pune Ring Road, and continue southwards to Bengaluru. According to Times Property, construction on the project is already under way, with work having commenced without a formal inauguration.
Recalling the development of the original Mumbai–Pune Expressway, Gadkari noted that a private firm had initially quoted Rs 3,600 crore for its construction, yet the state government completed it for just Rs 1,600 crore.
This latest expressway initiative represents a substantial investment in regional infrastructure, aiming to boost connectivity, reduce travel times, and stimulate economic activity. By improving road networks and integrating them with urban transport upgrades, the government seeks to transform the travel experience for millions while enhancing trade and mobility across western and southern India.
