August 18, 2025: Mumbai Metro has inaugurated a direct pedestrian bridge connecting its underground Line 3 station to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport’s Terminal 2, reducing the walking distance for passengers from 450 metres to just 118 metres.
The newly built steel footbridge is 88 metres long and 4.3 metres wide, standing 23 metres above the under-construction Metro Line 7A. Officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) stated that the project was completed with careful planning and strict safety protocols, ensuring construction did not interfere with other ongoing works in the area.
The bridge is expected to make travel smoother for air passengers, eliminating the need to cross busy roads with luggage or depend on motorised transport for last-mile connectivity. An official involved in the project highlighted the challenges of construction at such height above an active metro site, saying, “Precision was critical at every stage of planning and execution to ensure safety and structural stability.” The steel structure was chosen for its strength, durability, and lower environmental footprint compared to concrete alternatives.
With parts of Metro Line 3 already operational, the bridge is being seen as an important addition to Mumbai’s sustainable transport system. Authorities emphasised that by reducing reliance on vehicles for airport access, the project will contribute to lowering carbon emissions and encourage more sustainable travel habits.
Urban transport experts have noted that the seamless integration of metro and airport facilities is a hallmark of global cities, reducing congestion and improving the commuter experience. The MMRDA stressed that the bridge will serve millions of passengers annually, particularly business and international travellers, and represents a step forward in merging two major transport networks without creating delays in parallel infrastructure works.
